Sanctuaries
Published in Paperback by Writers' Collective (01 April, 2003)
Average review score:

Adventures in Light and ColorThis slender book is far more than a strikingly visual evocation of the New England landscape, its lost wolves and native Wampanoags. Its multiple layers of hidden imagery and the sparse, powerful and poetic text encourage readers of all ages to enjoy the sensuousness of our great open spaces, to develop a better appreciation of native culture, to feel the thrill of finding things others don't see. If I were going on solitary retreat, I would take Sanctuaries and read it time and time again. On the other hand, I would also delight in staying home and enjoying it with my children.

Sanctuaries the Northeast: A Guide to Lodgings in Monasteries, Abbeys, and Retreats of the United States
Published in Paperback by Harmony Books (May, 1991)

Wonderful, enchanting, informativeI had been looking for a book of monastaries and convents which were open to visitors and offered retreats.
Sanctuaries was just what I had been searching for!
I visited St. Joseph's Abbey in Massachusetts, based on the description given in this book, and was pleasantly rewarded.
This is a wonderful book for anyone looking for a simpler way of looking at our complicated lives.

Sea Kayaking Along the New England Coast
Published in Paperback by Appalachian Mountain Club Books (March, 1991)
Average review score:

Ultimate New England Kayak BookA delightful collection of ocean kayaking trips along the entire New England coast, from Maine to Connecticut. The book describes more than 30 trips in detail: put-in spots, suggested route, possible lunch spots, scenery, caution areas, campsites, and local-knowledge items such as what tide is required for a passage, plus post-paddling eating establishments. Venn covers both day trips and multi-day camping expeditions. The author has clearly done her research in planning each trip, incorporating her own knowledge and experience with that of local paddlers who have done these trips for years. Venn's style is easy to read and follow, and if you have a navigational chart of the area it is very easy to map her suggested route using her text descriptions and the maps provided. The introduction contains very brief overviews of such general topics as equipment, navigation, and rescues, but because of the limited space delegated them, these topics are best covered elsewhere. Overall, this is an immensely useful book with enough detail so you know what to expect before you drive to the boat launch. If you live in New England, I highly recommend it.

The Shaker Kitchen: Over 100 Recipes from Canterbury Shaker Village
Published in Hardcover by Clarkson N. Potter (April, 1994)
Average review score:

food for the soulThis is the best, the easiest, the tastiest way to re-create your grandmother's cooking. Simple directions and easily-found ingredients plus appetizing-looking pictures of the food get you going. Preparation and cooking times are included.
We have been to the Shaker Village in Canterbury, eaten at their candlelit dinners - and then I have come home and followed the recipe in the book for what I ate the night before - and it both looked as good and tasted as delicious as when their chef prepared it.
This is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks.

An invaluable book for the local and out-of-town shopper! This innovative book is a must for those who like to shop in Connecticut. It tells you where to go, how to get there, and what you will find when you arrive. Ms. Habib is truly on to something, and should consider expanding to other areas such as Long Island and New Jersey. After you read this book, you will wonder how you ever went shopping in Fairfield County without it. If you like to shop and cannot live without a Hagstrom Map, then you have to have this book!

Showdown at Apple Hill
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (March, 1982)
Average review score:

The Apple Hill MysteriesThis story begins in Dover Valley, where Billy and Jenny have just moved in. As their friends tell about the Quarry gang, they become more aware of the real place they live. As they soon learn, the Apple Tree School House for retarded children isn't what it seems. The school actually had ties to the gang. After the visit, Billy and Jenny try to find out who killed the gang leader and where all the money was that the gang had stolen. Billy and Jenny get clues from the people of Dover Valley and use them to solve the mystery. They learn about how members of the Quarry gang were killed, how Kurt Heineken was arrested, and how the leader of the gang escaped. After many years, he was found dead and the search for his assailant began. After investigating and old graveyard, many of the mysteries in the plot came to life. The epic tale of murder and money will keep any reader happy.
I liked this book because of the descriptive words, compelling plot, and good foreshadowing. This book stacked up to other mysteries very well and can be a good alternative from The Goosebumps series. An interesting plot and neat organization add to this already amazing book. Details and realism make the reader truly become the character. Also, I would recommend this book for all middle school and high school reading levels and for anyone liking for a thrilling mystery.
